En Plein Air: Outdoor, open air, on location painting, with a splash of crazy, speedy determination.

I enjoy documenting locations and absorbing a sense of place. I’ve painted in ice storms and scorching hot deserts, in both rural and cosmopolitan areas. Most work is completed within 4-8 hours using a simple box of 24 colors, a few brushes and a rag on 200 lb, 9x12”-11x15” watercolor pad. Sometimes I return to a complex place twice to complete it, and usually snap a photo so that I revisit for any final details. When clean, fresh water wasn’t available I’ve used ocean and river water, Sprite, coffee and other dodgy liquids. My favorite times are when children come near or traditional male copy painters in Guatemala watch my observational technique in awe of the quick and spontaneous capturing in real time, and by a woman, no less!

Northern New Mexico Watercolors

Ah, the open vast skies, the iron oxide earth, the high desert and ancient geologic formations of New Mexico is magical calling me back year after year to places like Ojo Calientes and Ghost Ranch.

Watercolors of Guatemala

My partner co-founded Maya Health Alliance which first brought me to Guatemala in 2004. In 2019 we moved to Antigua. Over these 20+ years it has been an idea climate for en plain air watercolor painting.

Travel Watercolors

With a love for cultural diversity I have enjoyed pilgrimages and journeys to many parts of the world and a trusted, compact art tote almost always goes along. I paint in-flight, on both short and long hauls both in preparation and in putting final touches on works done in the field.
